Video Highlights Community Center Blight

The City of Merriam today released a video covering the upcoming Community Center ballot initiative. The video highlights the issues with the current facilities, and features residents sharing their views on the future of recreation in Merriam.

Studies show the Irene B. French Community Center and Merriam Aquatic Center need an estimated $20 million in repairs and renovations to bring them up to modern standards, including being compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Voters will determine the future of recreation in Merriam on Sept. 15, 2017, by deciding to repair the current recreation facilities for $20 million with a “no vote,” or approve a new $30 million community center and pool at Vavra Park, of which $24 million would be paid in bonds. A “yes vote” would also include a new 10-year quarter-cent sales tax to help cover the bond payment. The sales tax would take effect on Jan. 1, 2018.

More information about the 2017 Community Center Ballot Initiative.

The City is offering guided facility tours to show maintenance and repair issues in person.

Residents have until Aug. 25 to register to vote, or by Aug. 16 to automatically receive a ballot in the mail. More information on how to vote.
