Former Merriam City Councilman Dies

MERRIAM, KS - Kevin Buchta, former member of the Merriam City Council, died on January 14, 2014, after battling cancer for several months. He was 78 years old. Kevin was born Robert Kevin Buchta in Omaha, NE, but was always known by his middle name.

Besides representing Ward 3 on the Merriam City Council for eight years, Kevin had a long history of service to the Merriam area. He held several volunteer executive positions with the Antioch Hills Homes Association. Kevin was a member and chairperson of the Merriam Tree Board. He also coordinated the community Spring Tree Sale for several years. Kevin was one of the planners instrumental in the development of the Merriam Turkey Creek Streamway.

Kevin served on the committee to bring the Flags 4 Freedom Display to Merriam. Kevin was a member of Queen of the Holy Rosary parish, Historic Merriam, the American Legion, Arbor Day Foundation, and the Merriam Downtown Development Council.

Kevin’s professional career was spent in marketing and broadcasting. He was the Assistant Promotion/Marketing Director of KMTV Television Station in Omaha. He was the Promotion/Marketing Director at WMAQ Radio in Nashville, TN and at KMBC-TV and KCMO Radio in Kansas City. Kevin was Office Manager at Sterling Screen Printing in Overland Park prior to his retirement.

Jean Wilson Buchta, his loving wife of 49 years states, “Since Kevin’s illness, I have had so many community leaders tell me how much they admired Kevin’s devotion to the Merriam community as a whole.”

A visitation has been scheduled from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Friday, January 17, 2014 at the Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS 66203 with a memorial service scheduled for 12:30 PM, Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the funeral home.
