Johnson Drive Bridge reopens to traffic
MERRIAM, KANSAS (Aug. 14, 2014) – After several months of construction and closures, motorists who traverse Johnson Drive in Merriam can finally breathe a sigh of relief, the detour is done. The City of Merriam is pleased to announce that the Johnson Drive Bridge over Turkey Creek will reopen to traffic by noon on Friday, August 15th.
In February, the Johnson Drive Bridge was closed to replace structurally deficient components and improve safety for vehicular, transit, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The seven-month project re-routed motorists while a total reconstruction of the bridge was completed. With an initial delay in materials and a setback with utility relocation under the bridge, the completion date had been set for the end of August. However, cooperative weather and a proficient crew allowed contractors to finish two-weeks earlier than projected.
A brief ribbon cutting will be held Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. Contractors will remove construction signs and barricades, allowing traffic on the new bridge by noon on Friday.
