The City of Merriam was recently named the #1 ranked best place to start a business in the state of Kansas by NerdWallet, a San Francisco based company providing information, insight and consumer-driven advice about personal finance. The report, released this week, indicates a strong influx of economic development activity in both Kansas and Missouri, and shows the Kansas City region dominating the upper rankings which include Merriam, Mission, Lenexa and Overland Park.

To help entrepreneurs find the best place to start a business in Kansas, NerdWallet crunched the data to compare 46 cities with a population of 5,000 or more and communities of greater than 500 businesses. To calculate the overall score per location, the following criterion was weighed:

Business climate - 65% of the overall score based on three metrics from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners
Local economic health - 35% of the overall score, based on three metrics from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey

Merriam, whose population rests at just over 11,000 residents, ranked as having the third highest number of businesses per people (13.46) among all 46 cities analyzed. Seaboard Corporation, an agriculture and shipping company, as well as IKEA (which opened in September, 2014), among many other businesses, assist in Merriam’s healthy economy by providing hundreds of local jobs in the region.
