Merriam wins award for Johnson Drive Bridge project

The city of Merriam was recently recognized for its work on the Johnson Drive Bridge, by receiving a City Public Improvement Award from The American Council of Engineering Companies of Kansas (ACEC). The city was selected for the 5,000–19,999 population category. The engineering firm on the project was GBA Architects + Engineers and the contractor was Pyramid.
ACEC presents the annual award to recognize engineering projects that benefit the residents of a community and not for engineering design. The Johnson Drive Bridge replaced structurally deficient components and made safety improvements for vehicular, transit, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
Located over Turkey Creek, between Merriam Lane/Campbell Street and Merriam Drive, the bridge reopened in August 2014 after several months of construction and closures. One of the city’s primary goals for the project was to open the bridge prior to the September 2014 grand opening of nearby IKEA, which increased traffic through the area.
