It's that time of year when the air turns crisp and leaves begin to fall. As a Merriam resident, you're still permitted to burn those leaves provided you meet the following requirements:
- Your burn must be no more than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high
- Your burn must be at least 15 feet from any structure
- The wind must not exceed 15 mph during your burn
If you're unable to meet any of these requirements, you'll need to apply for a 30-day burn permit with the Overland Park Fire Department (OPFD), which provides fire protection for the City of Merriam.
Applications must be submitted through the new online ePlace website at opkansas.org. Click ePlace at the bottom of the opening webpage under “Online Services” and follow instructions on the page. You must first register for an ePlace online account before applying for a burn permit.
Once registered, you can apply for permits, check your permit or inspection status, and download your issued permit all from the comfort of your home, anytime day or night. You'll even be notified if burning is temporarily suspended because of unfavorable conditions. Note: burn permits expire 30 days after issue date. You can reapply for a new permit if desired.
If you need help with the online ePlace registration process you can call OPFD at 913-895-6069. If you have questions about burning rules or burn permits you can call OPFD at 913-895-8456.
