The Merriam Community Center’s opening day is delayed due to COVID-19. The community center was scheduled to open June 1 to charter members and June 8 to the general public.
COVID-19 has created supply chain delays. Manufacture shutdowns have prevented the delivery of critical equipment that is required to complete and open the building. This will delay the completion of construction by approximately three weeks. Once the building is done, the City will follow CDC and Johnson County guidelines for opening facilities like this one to the public.
What we do know:
- Based on CDC and Johnson County guidelines for gyms and group gathering restrictions, the Irene B. French Community Center will likely not reopen to the public.
- If you purchase a charter membership or summer membership now, you’ll still reap the benefits. Charter memberships will run for 12 months from the new date we open to the public and summer memberships will run for the first 100 days after we open to the public. Month-to-month memberships will be available after opening as well.
These are the plans as of today. Due to these uncertain times, we may need to adjust them based on new information due to COVID-19. We’ll let you know as soon as we decide the Merriam Community Center’s new opening date. Thank you for sticking with us and making Merriam and our community Just Right!
